I just got back from a walk. I am listening to “Second Helping” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is a perfect ending to a pretty good day. It was mostly work and that was neither here nor there. Maybe I was watching the clock a little more than I normally do. I talked to my mother and my brother on the phone today. We are planning my brother’s family’s visit to Ohio for Thanksgiving. We are pumped. I like talking to my mother and brother for pretty much the same reason. They always have great stories about people who aren’t named me or my friends. My mother has many tales about all of these people that I know but have not had any contact with since I moved out of my parent’s house at least, with me having lost touch with many of the people she mentions when I was an early teen and started getting into rock and roll and books and getting weird. So I know all of these people but my mental picture of them is from when I was twelve. Or I know these people that my mother talks about because they have been my mother’s friends for years but we have never really met past “This is my son Chris”. So the stories are about real people that I know but they could just as easily be fictitious characters. All of the stories my mother tells are great because they are real but I have to do a lot of work in my imagination to fill in the spaces. There are people that I knew when I was a kid who are now adults and living real lives and everything and it is cool to here about what they are doing. I get a lot of stories that start with “Do you remember so and so?” that are always good. I get a bunch of stories out of my brother about these crazy Southern Californian desert rednecks that he works with and they are always kick ass too for the same reasons. My mother and brother know how to tell a story. They pick up on the little things about people. They know what makes people unique and stress that part when they are telling a story. I talk to my mom and my brother once a week and I look forward to it.

I worked all day at the office. It was what it was. I am thankful that time always flies by fast. Inspired by that blues thing on PBS last week, I have been heading to the library every couple of days and getting a bunch of blues records to listen to on the computer in the office. Lo fi records sound great on computer speakers. I have learned a couple of things doing this. One is that “The Legendary Modern Recordings” by John Lee Hooker is one of the greatest albums of all time. You can hear what God sounds like with a boogie rhythm. After only three cuts, this record made it to my top ten of all time or my list of desert island discs – however you make the distinction for records that totally rule. I love it that I can still get completely blown away by music after all these years and so many average records. I love it that I still get the chills. I love the fact that I had to stop myself from bouncing in my chair just because I was losing control of my body having lost myself in the music. I know that sounds weird or stupid to say but I was wholly absorbed in a record again and that experience is a great thing and one of the reasons that I keep going. The other thing that I have learned is the fact that just because a record is by an old black guy doesn’t mean that the record is automatically going to rock. I learned that ten years ago with jazz records and I am learning it again. That’s how life is.

Laurie and I went and saw “School of Rock” tonight. It was a stupid movie made funny by the very hilarious Jack Black. I laughed out loud several times. That is an amazing fact considering I had to go to the bathroom for more than half the movie and there were a couple of jackasses behind us that were chewing popcorn louder than I have ever heard it chewed before and hacking up a storm ala Baby Fea on mic circa 2000. I was very annoyed and still laughed.

As a rule, I would rather be doing more.

You hate to throw around the phrase “must win” this early in the season but I honestly believe that it applies to tonight’s game. The Browns must beat the Steelers tonight or the season is pretty much over. I have a hard time believing that a 1 and 4 team will make the playoffs. So, go Browns. Fuck the Steelers.

I had a good day today. I did the laundry. I went to practice. I came home and listened to the newly re-issued again “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” by the Byrds. That is a great record made better by a second disc of Gram Parsons singing all the songs. With as busy as I try to keep myself, I consider it an accomplishment to be able to lie on the futon for a couple of hours listening to records. I feel like I really got something done. Laurie and I just went for a walk and now it is back to the futon. Life is beautiful.

Yesterday, Laurie and I went for a walk and watched “Ringu”. I don’t know if I like it more or less than “The Ring”. It, like the book, certainly explains everything a lot better than “The Ring” but I don’t know if that is a good thing. It was creepy. I will give it that. I worked earlier in the day and Thea and I went shopping. Although I am not a big fat girl and see no reason, as a man, for me to be anywhere near a mall. Sometimes I like to hang out with Thea and that is what she likes to do. Shopping with her is an experience that I wish all of the listeners could experience at least once. As usual, I was pretty appalled by the humanity but it is good to see it, in all its horrific wonder, up close every once in a while. Besides the shopping experience and all that entails, I found a mint first edition of “Infinite Jest” for seven bucks at a used bookstore out by Great Northern Mall. It is an understatement to say that I was totally pumped up.

Alright, I am off to the futon. I will talk to you tomorrow on the Assholier than Thou Good Times Happy Friends Monday Morning Radio Show Starring Baby Fea (yea).
